HOW TO KEEP MARBLE STAIN-FREE

Marble is the most elegant of all natural stones and an obvious choice for flooring, worktops, and other surfaces. However, stains detract from the beauty of this magnificent stone. To understand the reasons for the propensity of marble to stain easily, one must look at its composition, for it defines the characteristics of marble. Marble is a metamorphic rock composed primarily of calcite (CaCO3) and other minerals such as mica, quartz, pyrite, graphite, and iron oxides.

CHARACTERISTICS THAT DEFINE MARBLE

Porosity: Marble contains small, interconnecting channels that allow liquids and gases to pass through.  The level of porosity in marble varies depending on its origin, the formation process, and the composition of the various minerals present in it.

Sensitivity: This stone is extremely sensitive to acidic substances like citric juices, vinegar, wine, coffee or tea.  Acidic chemicals etch the marble surfaces, causing discoloration and stains.

Softness: Although marble is known as durable, it is nevertheless a soft stone, especially when compared to granite or sandstone.

DAILY MAINTAINENACE

Regular cleaning is necessary to prevent stains on marble. Marble is a porous stone, therefore, it can absorb liquids. These easily seep into the stone, causing an unattractive discoloration that is difficult to remove.  The most important step in preventing stains on the marble is to clean up any spilled food right away.   Additionally, precautions should be taken not to allow water to stand on the marble surface, as it will  oxidize with the iron present in the stone.  This causes yellow stains on the surface of the stone, which are difficult to eradicate completely.

Marble should be kept clean with a gentle cloth or mop. Use pH neutral cleaning chemicals to prevent unsightly stains and protect the marble from damage.

SEALING

Sealing is the most effective approach to protecting marble from stains. Sealing entails the application of a protective material to the surface of the stone. As this substance enters the pores of the stone, it forms a protective layer. This layer acts as a barrier, safeguarding the stone from potential damage by preventing liquids and other impurities from entering the marble. The sealant can be water- or solvent-based, and depending on the stone’s requirements, a tropical or impregnating solution can be employed to close the pore.

It is critical to note that sealants will only delay the absorption of liquids into the stone, not totally block it. This delay, however, is adequate to prevent major injury if the liquid or contaminant is removed soon. Another factor to consider is that sealants tend to wear off over time and must be reapplied. The frequency will be decided by both maintenance and application types.

POLISHING

The marble polishing procedure aims to restore and enhance the inherent beauty of marble surfaces. Polishing marble or any other natural stone is a complex technique that necessitates experience and knowledge of the stone.  Specifically formulated chemicals are used to polish the surface using diamond grits. All marble surfaces, including the floor, kitchen counters, counter tops, tabletops, sinks and even the scalding, should be polished.

The marble polishing method includes the removal of stains as well as the repair of any minute scratches and cracks. The polish not only protects the stone but also gives it a beautiful luster.
